Vrede vzw vindt de weigering van de Egyptische autoriteiten om de internationale vredesmilitanten de toegang naar Gaza te ontzeggen via Rafah onbegrijpelijk. Op 31 december worden meer dan 1300 internationale deelnemers uit 41 landen verwacht voor een mars van het zuiden van Gaza naar de Eretz grenspost met Israël in het noorden van Gaza. Er doen ook 63 Belgen mee, onder wie o.a. vertegenwoordigers van Vrede vzw, het Vlaams Palestina Komitee, l'Association Belgo-Palestinienne en lokale Palestinagroepen. Zij willen de Israëlische oorlog van afgelopen winter herdenken en vragen de opheffing van de blokkade tegen Gaza.
De Egyptische autoriteiten zijn al meer dan twee maanden op de hoogte van de Gaza Freedom March en stonden in contact met de organisatoren ervan. De coördinatie van de Mars heeft gevolg gegeven aan alle door de Egyptische regering opgelegde eisen zoals het overhandigen van de paspoortgegevens van alle deelnemers alsook de belofte dat er geen acties zouden komen in Egypte zelf.
Vrede vzw is verbaasd dat de Egyptische regering een mars verbiedt die niet op haar territorium plaatsvindt en louter tot doel heeft om op vreedzame wijze aandacht te vragen voor de mensonterende situatie waarin de bevolking van Gaza zich bevindt.
We vragen aan de Belgische autoriteiten om bij de Egyptische regering aan te dringen dat ze haar houding herziet en alsnog toestemming geeft voor de toegang tot Gaza via Rafah.

One year ago, on the 27th of December, Israël started a ground and air offensive against the people of Gaza. This left over 1400 people dead.
Gaza has been completely locked off of the rest of the world since 2007. Making it practically impossible for essential goods to enter the territory or the rebuild the destroyed infrastructure.
One year after the start of the war, on the 27th and 28th of December 2009, over a thousand peace activists, from more than 40 countries will attempt to enter the Gaza-strip. Among them are more then 50 Belgian citizens mobilised by the Vlaams Palestina Komitee and the Association Belgo-Palestinienne . They wil try to reach Gaza through the border post of Rafah. Inside they will personally document the destructions, the impossibility to import goods for reconstruction and the consequences of the blockade on daily life for the people of Gaza. Furthermore they will take part in the massive demonstration in Gaza on the 31th of December to call for an end of the siege.
An international comittee has been minisculy preparing this action for months. The Belgian delegation did as well and has sent a representative to Egypt to negotiate access with the authorities. In the beginning reactions by the Egyptian authorities were positive. But yesterday they were told that Egypt was not willing to allow delegations because it would be too dangerous in the region.
We hereby want to bring to your attention the urgency of the request of the delegation as many of the participants are leaving in the coming days for Egypt.
We would like to ask you to bring over our concerns to the Egyptian authorities and to make use of your authority to help influcence the decision.
We hope a positive reply can be given as their march is only intentended to attract the world's attention to the harsh living conditions of the people in the Gaza-strip and to show solidarity with the population in these days when victims will be remembered.
